Ode to Parents

With unsuspecting eyes
Her baby-blues invitation to cries
     Inconceivable to walk away
Da Da
Ma Ma
What have you in store for me today?

The innocent look for answers
The waking from dreams of dancers and prancers
She’s at your mercy for coaching and guidance
Reaching out
Without doubt
The safety net exists between the arms of her parents

With knowledge at her walkway
As experience leads her pathway
She develops strength from words you teach
When aware
Please be fair
To resemble the practice of what you preach

She is subject to impression
With discipline enforced by each lesson
She’ll understand the right and wrong way
Learning
Yearning
Your thoughts and ideas of each brand new day

Infect her with joy
Allow your happiness to become her new toy
For in her heart she will carry your emotion
Hold her
Hug her
In due time you’ll be thanked for your devotion

And when the stars rise
Along with extremely tired eyes
Be certain she’ll retain the image of your love
For your assured
She’s adored
The gift of life granted by you, the angels and the lord above

Introduction to Ode To Parents

So readers, before I knew it I was having a child for the first time.  What an experience that was going to be.  I married a woman 2 years older than me and her biological clock was ticking.  Well the timing could not be better as it allowed me to feel important in life again and it showed in various phases of my work ethic.  I excelled to the number one sales rep in my company and I can contribute that to “child” motivation.  Another motivation was the next poem I wrote.  When I played with my child I could not help but wonder how reliant she was upon me for everything.  I believe any parent will relate to the following poem and I look forward to hearing your opinions.

The Dreams Resolution

As he stares deep into her eyes
He sees a light which he’s yet to ever see
Its rays tend to reflect upon many feelings
Presenting a magnificent rainbow seen only by he

He longs to carry this rainbow everywhere
He never wants to interfere with its design
He only wants to add to its arrangement
To be warmed by its radiant sunshine

Strive, as he will effortlessly, to achieve a harmony
He’ll venture through the rainbows peaceful existence
So that the light he sees in her shadowed eyes
Will reflect a binding of color to narrow their distance

He wants to be a mirror to reflect from
He wants her to glance at him from time to time
Wanting her not only to see her own true beauty
But enabling him to hold the image of her in mind

For he knows this image has enhanced his life
Wanting only to give this joyous feeling back
He will stop at nothing to deliver this message
Of caring and sharing he yearns to fulfill in her eyes so black

So embrace his hands for this fantastic journey
Through the many adventures of an unsuspecting night
For when her eyes appear too dark to see
His promise of willing eyes shall lead them both into the light

Valentine’s Day Love

Vows to love, for each one to say
A boy, a girl, to share this day
  Life’s sacrifice of hearts
   Each swearing no departs
Never letting their dreams drift away
Two brace on, holding together strong
In one small breath, they cling to belong
       Now that perfect kiss
        Each promising bliss
Sweet love will last so long

Deepening their understanding of what the day is for
Alone in their minds, for others they’ll ignore
Your heart in mine I’ll hold for evermore

Love that was never
  One unjustly
    Valentine’s Day
       Endeavor

I GIVE YOU MY HEART FOREVER

Introduction to Valentines Day Love

This would wind up being the last poem I wrote in college for an ex girlfriend. I did not put a lot of effort into this next one only because – as we all do from time to time – we wait for the last minute to come up with a gift. Cannot recall if this poem did me any good that evening but, nonetheless, I can only hope that it can do well for you one day if needed for a girl you are looking to impress. Anyways, hope you enjoy it and look forward to seeing this on a card one day.

Over The Edge

A thought travels through an eerie mind
Through a path with a weary distance
Tiring the thought as it passes in thick blood
Retrieving all its strength to get through such resistance

Shall it find its passageway
      Can the damage really appear
For thoughts approaching, absorbing this destination
Will open many eyes, will open much fear

This is not a sane thought
For it brings with it too much hate
And if it reaches the line of action
For the hearts and minds of many, it may be too late

It brings with it a vengeance
Revenge that ten men can do unto others
It won’t matter who’s around when it hits
For it can splatter unknowns, neighbors, sisters, brothers

It comes with a flair for insanity
It leaves the brain with a reckless train of thought
Scary thing is, after all is said and done, he doesn’t know
He doesn’t care about the tracks of blood from his onslaught

Find this man help, retrieve him a new conscience
Search deep within his soul and rip out his pain
You people must listen to his feelings
For it is you who will suffer when he goes insane

If you turn away from what he offers
If you doubt and criticize what he has to say
It is he who will have the last laugh
When he captures you heart and blows your head away

When the sun creeps down

When the sun creeps down
At the side of the earth
It is at that point we learn
What the next day is worth

For the many colors
     Perceived from this glorious sight
Gives the knowledge of a new day
Which we sleep on at night

It is the sun that is beet red
You can expect the heat to rise
Where the children rely on mischief
And the parents justify their cries

And if the sun is everlasting yellow
The next day will remain the same
For when it is our fault today
Tomorrow is recognition of who’s to blame

But it is the sun you cannot see set
That is the time to be aware
For when the clouds have a hidden agenda
Surely we will be the worst for the wear

So when the sun creeps down at the side of the earth
And at that point you learn what the next day is worth

Remember to hope for the colors and understand
That it is not you in charge, but the sun that’s in command

Introduction to When The Sun Creeps Down

When college ended I moved out to California and began my “career” life. I found out I had a lot of difficulty fitting into corporate America.  I also ran into much trouble trying to figure out who were my friends and who were out to just use me.  I started to believe that there were outside forces that would determine the outcome of my life, my decisions, and my relationships.  Religion was not something I ever felt comfortable with but I knew that God existed.  The next poem discusses an outside force that I created just to enforce this belief that many events thrust upon us in our lifetime are through no control of our own.

The Proverbs

In a world lacking communication
Only mind readers prosper

When we look to stretch the truth
We only wind up expanding the lie

If you realize your expectation is too high
You have just taken the 1st step toward meeting your goal

Introduction to The Proverbs

Throughout my life, not just college, I always admired signs along the road, next to churches, in synagogues that would sum up a lifetime in just a sentence or two. It always made me think as to how I could put together in such few words a description of a span of time in my life. In reviewing my own 3 proverbs it seems to indicate to me that I developed my few words based upon relationships with girls, with family and with the working environment. I look forward to your comments and thoughts should they have an impact on any part of your life you may have wanted to sum up in a few words.

Home Sweet Home

This family with which I state

Bares a resemblance of love and hate

     For I am sure

     As we endure

That many of you can truly relate

They lived on top of Blue ridge Hill

They lived on dreams and hopes to fulfill

     Their was the sister

     Could no one resist her

For everyone knew she was up on the pill

Father never left this grand place

But always kept up with his own pace

     For being a holy man

He kept up with Gods plan

And would never miss saying his grace

The boy was of the troublesome sort

He always did what he shouldn’t ought

One day he really said it

     Black eyes did he inherit

And from then on his lesson was taught

The mother was of the gentle kind

But was always caught up in a bind

      Looking the other way

      When skies were gray

The relaxing sun she never would find

With this family of four

Life had become quite a bore

So with a bat of her eyes

     Sister left with the guys

And the hill was rid of a whore

Along with one great big feast

With flour, bread and yeast

     The father said

     I must unwed

I have decided to become a church priest

With two gone and two left pale

The boy knew he just could not fail

     But off went his mouth

     And off to the south

Did the boy wind up in jail

So with one left in the dome

Mother feeling all so alone

     She knit away

     With one thing to say

There is just no such thing as “Home Sweet Home”

Introduction to Home Sweet Home

We all want to believe that our own family is the perfect family. Unfortunately, that is a very rare occurrence. We find out that we have faults and we have to learn how to deal with them. Love generally carries you through, but if times are that difficult, a parting of ways is never easy on anyone. Fortunately, even though we did have some rough patches, my parents were able to keep it together for us. To this day I am grateful for their efforts. The next poem was written during a difficult time in the family relationship with the hopes that my parents would see that they did have a choice. At the end of the day we have to do what we feel is best for one another and for oneself. Since there is no right answer I hope your family knows how to figure out what they need to do to raise the children under the best circumstances possible.

Life and Death

Death does not make life over

Yet brings forth more meaning toward life

Death surrounds the mind

Where life surrounds the meaning of death

Therefore, the value of death

Make the meaning of life understandable

If life were to go on forever

Death would no longer have meaning

And without death to bring out the good qualities in life

Why would we want to live forever?

Introduction to Life and Death

Let us face it, sometimes we are out of our minds when we sit down to write something poetic.  Entering my final years in college I was getting a little too relaxed in my studies, and quite honestly, a little too high on a fairly regular basis.  I still cannot imagine how I graduated.  Regardless, next week’s poem is simply one I just won’t be able to explain.  There are times when I read it and I say, “Well that makes sense,” and then there are times where I say, “huh???”  In any case, if you can figure out what it means, I encourage you to suggest what I may have been thinking at the time.

The Power of Friendships

She said that she said

She knows what others don’t know

They all lie to one another

As the webs of deceit begin to grow

All out for themselves to protect

     No one comprehending the pain

That each casts upon one another

Ignorant to the fact that there is nothing to gain

The work that was involved

In building these friendships over a season

Has been destroyed in a heartbeat

Through this momentary lapse of reason

Take note of your surroundings

Take inventory of the people you know are fair

For all is never lost in this cruel world

As those friends will always rise up to be there

The ones that care

Will assist you through these rough times

The ones that hold ill will

Will surely suffer as your strength climbs

When we live and learn from our experiences

When we use our power to make amends

The enemies we must leave behind us

Can never outweigh the bond of such friends

So remember when all is said and done

And the difficulty of relationships is no longer under attack

It will be because you chose wisely

To hold onto the friends that will always have your back

[Note to my readers: I apologize, but vacation called and I have missed the past two weeks.]

Introduction to The Power of Friendships

By the end of my 2nd year at college I had developed some pretty good relationships. The one thing I have always believed is that you can never have too many friends but you do need to be careful, as many friends are not in the friendship for the right reasons. Looking back on my life I have lost a few friends that I thought were lifetime friends but I was always quick to pick up on why they were not worth remaining in my life. I am proud to say that I have 3 “best” friends and I cherish their ability to have my back whenever I do need them, as I know I would be there for them whenever they would call. The next poem gives you an abstract point of view of how to choose properly when it comes to the lifetime friend(s) we all hope to attract.

The Dreams Destiny

Staring across the room

      A beauty yet to behold

A decision to be made

Is a new relationship about to unfold?

Get an early feeling

      Something strong

Your heart starts pounding

      Is something wrong?

There is a becoming

      Of a strange emotion

Do you want to move in

      On this awkward notion?

You inch your way over

      Preparing this new start

It has to be perfect

      So they might never part

She glances at you

A knot starts somewhere down inside

You feel like running away

But you know there is nowhere to hide

As you drew near

     And the words ushered through

She responds in kind

To relieve the burden felt deep inside you

You kept your cool

      You played your cards right

It appears you’ve made that first line

      Last the Whole Night!

Introduction to The Dreams Destiny

So continuing on in my college days I knew that some girl was to come along that would give me the feeling that love at first sight may actually exist.  While standing in a bar, not too many drinks in me at the time, I saw this girl standing on the other side of the room that I could not look away from.  As I realized that the pressure was on me to make the first move, all I could think of was that I had one chance to make an impression.

Next week’s new poem walks you through the anxiety I had when I thought I had met the “one”.  For others, as in this case for me, the first “one” is normally never the right “one”.  But I will say that practice makes perfect and, as rare as I had this feeling in my lifetime, it was still good to work on perfecting my words for when the right “one” did come along.  It gave me the confidence necessary to overcome my fears when I finally did find my true “one”.

The Lake

It was a moon out, but not any ordinary moon

It had one of those eerie shapes about it, one that was off tune

Was it really the moon to blame, or perhaps the dog that barked too loud on that one strange filled night?

For Rick and Sue had passed many a year with everything going, what seemed to be, so right

But it was still the night of the eerie moon and the barking dog

That something awful would happen, something beyond any fog

It was a night that Rick and Sue decided to take a dive, a dive that would cause many a tide

As Rick’s head hit water first he had felt a numbness, unexplained, but did subside

Next Sue dipped her foot in, one toe at a time

Even though she appeared clumsy, she did everything in rhyme

Both swam together, both splashed together, both loved together, both died together

Perhaps drowned by sorrow, perhaps drowned for eternal togetherness, no one will ever know

But it was on that night, when the moon was eerie, the dog barking and the deathly lake still quivering that no one will ever go

For in that lake where two bodies tend to dwell

It is the people who remain un-wet from the lake of heaven

The Lake of Hell

Introduction to The Lake

When I needed a break from classes in college I used to go up to the northern section of the state where there was a lake that was a hot spot for diving. I was very intimidated by the higher elevations but I would go up there, take a peek down, and then walk back down to heights that I would be comfortable jumping from. I wrote the next poem based on the subject of dying a very lonely death, but one that would leave all in doubt as to the true meaning of why and how such death occurred. While I have no regrets ever making that tall leap of faith from the cliffs, I do believe next weeks poem will make you think twice about taking unnecessary risks.

The Dream

As a young boy I had a dream

A dream that was held for years

Being 21 and with my teens gone

This dream was turning to fears

I had sought the Perfect Woman

And had put forth many a ship for sail

So with the experiences I had gained

I would have bet my dream to fail

In my dream I had wanted a woman

A woman who possessed beauty inside and out

A woman with sheer confidence in herself

A woman that left me no doubt

In my dream she had to be pretty

But even she new nothing of it

She had to be charming and elegant

With a contagious sense of wit

In my dream she had to laugh

Even at things that were dumb

She had to make the boring times

Appear to be so much fun

In my dream she had to cry

      When things were going bad

She had to hold me

When things for me were sad

And in my 21st year of dreams

I was accompanied by something new

The vision of this perfect girl

Who I have come to learn as you

Introduction to The Dream

You know college days are generally where you really believe that love can exist. I mean high school sweethearts are one thing, but the girls you meet in college can actually change your belief that you may want to truly share your life with someone else.

I can honestly tell you that my high school days were nothing to write home about. College gave me the excitement I had been longing for all my life. The friendships I enjoyed, the girlfriends I had relationships with, made me realize that school was just one piece of the puzzle to fulfill a life.

The upcoming poem describes the pressure I felt in meeting another piece of the puzzle and, in reality, describes my belief in what a relationship should be about. I hope you enjoy it and certainly would not be surprised, if you are in college, that you may envision this poem as your own dream.

The Wine Merchants Party

Each liquor has certain tastes

     Each with a different quality

But I bet you did not know

Each liquor has a distinctive personality

Let’s join the party

For starters the real man walks in

The daddy of the liquor family

He has the strength of ten men

And bares the tough nickname J.D.

Next is the hopeful son

     Who will always wishfully dream

That he’ll fill in his dads shoes

With the promising name of Jim Beam

The mother wines around the house

     Fearing that everyone knows

She will never calm down

For she inherits the name Wild Irish Rose

The other son is the rich one

     Always fighting to be legal

But he knows the courts won’t agree

For he was acquitted Chivas Regal

The neighbors are the life of the party

     They are all the swingers

For when they come over alone

They always manage to pick up Two Fingers

Then there’s the guy that cannot get a date

But comes over for the helluvit

He dresses in a dashing white suit

And leaves in a gloomy Black Velvet

Next is the guy who speaks so loud

     Everyone can hear with Talker

The girls love his shape and body

But wear earmuffs next to Johnnie Walker

Well at some point you had to figure

Who would bring the cake and candy

And not to my surprise

Walks in the great Napoleon Brandy

With all the men getting drunk

     It’s time to get risky

So with the first dance

We join Miss Almaden with Canadian Club Whisky

And due to a recent divorce

And a new lease on life

Out on the dance floor

     We see Paul Masson’s ex-wife

Aerobics has helped out this new figurine

Every guy knowing he can’t fail her

We get to watch the gracefulness of

     California’s own Miss Taylor

Now with everyone on the floor

     We’ll finally say hello

To a couple of real winers

Known as Ernest and Julio Gallo

So with the party in tact

     And nobody being bossy

Mr. J.D. sends home the bouncers

Also known as Martini and Rossi

But now it is getting late

     And everyone leaves the party

Except the maid, Miss Inglenook

     And the butler, Ron Bacardi

So I’ll say goodnight

With my good friend Yukon Jack

We’ve written this story together

And now we are both gonna hit the sack.

Introduction to The Wine Merchants Party

All the pressure of getting to college to make a career for oneself takes it toll on so many teenagers. I always think back to my teenage years when I wanted to please my parents by doing well in school. I did transfer to a college where I was able to get out of my house and live on my own. The transformation was a difficult one but necessary. I found that the responsibility I developed from that experience was immeasurable.

One of the great pleasures of living on campus is you get to realize how much fun life can actually be. I am sure that is what led me to my first poem. I was working in a liquor store, and yes I did down a few drinks while going to college. It was owned by one person and it was a very small hut-like atmosphere. The night I wrote the upcoming poem was just a regular night where not much was going on. As always, I got the typical town lush coming in for his wild-irish rose but I always knew that would end my evening of customers. It was at that point I decided to do my round of stocking. During that process it came to me that every liquor in the store had some type of meaning.

The poem you will be introduced to next week will provide such meaning and I look forward to sharing the joy I had in my life during the college years with you.

Hello Reader. This is the 1st week of many weeks to come of the Life and Times of Michael Fidlow and my life experiences. Each 1st week I will attempt to set the tone for why the following weeks poem was written. I will try to give the poem or proverb its meaning so that you may have insight and understanding. I believe this approach will leave no doubt as to what has been written and why. Should there be any doubt in your interpretation please feel free to reach out and discuss it.

As always – Thanks for being Here!
