Over The Edge

A thought travels through an eerie mind
Through a path with a weary distance
Tiring the thought as it passes in thick blood
Retrieving all its strength to get through such resistance

Shall it find its passageway
      Can the damage really appear
For thoughts approaching, absorbing this destination
Will open many eyes, will open much fear

This is not a sane thought
For it brings with it too much hate
And if it reaches the line of action
For the hearts and minds of many, it may be too late

It brings with it a vengeance
Revenge that ten men can do unto others
It won’t matter who’s around when it hits
For it can splatter unknowns, neighbors, sisters, brothers

It comes with a flair for insanity
It leaves the brain with a reckless train of thought
Scary thing is, after all is said and done, he doesn’t know
He doesn’t care about the tracks of blood from his onslaught

Find this man help, retrieve him a new conscience
Search deep within his soul and rip out his pain
You people must listen to his feelings
For it is you who will suffer when he goes insane

If you turn away from what he offers
If you doubt and criticize what he has to say
It is he who will have the last laugh
When he captures you heart and blows your head away

Introduction to Over the Edge

I am sure that when Columbine happened it made me realize that all is not well in the world. When teens start shooting teens you begin to think that your problems may not be so bad. I know that throughout college and after college life was exciting and fun but not without its stressful times. Holding it together during those rough patches is the norm for most of us but for the few that cannot deal the following poem may describe what goes on in their minds. The most important item you should get out of it is that you, the outsider, need to pay attention to those that do not appear to have their act together for they are the ones that are most dangerous. Hope you enjoy the next poem as is goes down as one of my favorites.

When the sun creeps down

When the sun creeps down
At the side of the earth
It is at that point we learn
What the next day is worth

For the many colors
     Perceived from this glorious sight
Gives the knowledge of a new day
Which we sleep on at night

It is the sun that is beet red
You can expect the heat to rise
Where the children rely on mischief
And the parents justify their cries

And if the sun is everlasting yellow
The next day will remain the same
For when it is our fault today
Tomorrow is recognition of who’s to blame

But it is the sun you cannot see set
That is the time to be aware
For when the clouds have a hidden agenda
Surely we will be the worst for the wear

So when the sun creeps down at the side of the earth
And at that point you learn what the next day is worth

Remember to hope for the colors and understand
That it is not you in charge, but the sun that’s in command

Introduction to When The Sun Creeps Down

When college ended I moved out to California and began my “career” life. I found out I had a lot of difficulty fitting into corporate America.  I also ran into much trouble trying to figure out who were my friends and who were out to just use me.  I started to believe that there were outside forces that would determine the outcome of my life, my decisions, and my relationships.  Religion was not something I ever felt comfortable with but I knew that God existed.  The next poem discusses an outside force that I created just to enforce this belief that many events thrust upon us in our lifetime are through no control of our own.

The Lake

It was a moon out, but not any ordinary moon

It had one of those eerie shapes about it, one that was off tune

Was it really the moon to blame, or perhaps the dog that barked too loud on that one strange filled night?

For Rick and Sue had passed many a year with everything going, what seemed to be, so right

But it was still the night of the eerie moon and the barking dog

That something awful would happen, something beyond any fog

It was a night that Rick and Sue decided to take a dive, a dive that would cause many a tide

As Rick’s head hit water first he had felt a numbness, unexplained, but did subside

Next Sue dipped her foot in, one toe at a time

Even though she appeared clumsy, she did everything in rhyme

Both swam together, both splashed together, both loved together, both died together

Perhaps drowned by sorrow, perhaps drowned for eternal togetherness, no one will ever know

But it was on that night, when the moon was eerie, the dog barking and the deathly lake still quivering that no one will ever go

For in that lake where two bodies tend to dwell

It is the people who remain un-wet from the lake of heaven

The Lake of Hell

Introduction to The Lake

When I needed a break from classes in college I used to go up to the northern section of the state where there was a lake that was a hot spot for diving. I was very intimidated by the higher elevations but I would go up there, take a peek down, and then walk back down to heights that I would be comfortable jumping from. I wrote the next poem based on the subject of dying a very lonely death, but one that would leave all in doubt as to the true meaning of why and how such death occurred. While I have no regrets ever making that tall leap of faith from the cliffs, I do believe next weeks poem will make you think twice about taking unnecessary risks.
